Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) was established on January 10, 1997 when PETRONAS was invited by the Government to set up a University.The university was formerly known as The Institute of Technology PETRONAS (ITP) and was a wholly-owned subsidiary of PETRONAS.

ITP began operations at PERMATA, Bangi, Selangor on July 3, 1995. On July 26, 1995, ITP was registered as a private limited company and transferred its operations to Bandar Seri Iskandar, Perak Darul Ridzuan, on July 1, 1996.

Kedah sits in the northwest corner of Peninsular Malaysia. The state is fairly small, covering an area of 9,425 sq km that consists mostly of expansive padi fields and gently rolling hills. Off its coast are the legendary Malaysian isles of Langkawi, and rising to meet the western shoreline is the mountain of Gunung Jerai (1,200 meters above sea level).
